Ghost Train Trail Races
The Ghost Train Trail Races take place in New Hampshire along the Granite Town Rail Trail. This event is a fundraiser organized by the Conservation Commissions of Brookline and Milford, with all profits dedicated to trail maintenance and improvements. The course follows historical railroad tracks once used for shipping granite and ice.
The route is primarily straight, flat, and well-groomed, featuring only one hill. The surface consists of rail trail with approximately one mile of pavement for every 15-mile out-and-back loop. Some original railroad ties are still visible on the trail. The event incorporates a Halloween theme, and pet-related policies are in place to ensure safety, though licensed service dogs are permitted conforme to state laws.
Participants can choose from several event formats:
- 30-Hour Ultramarathon: Runners complete any multiple of 15 miles within a 30-hour limit.
- 30-Hour Relay: Teams of 2 to 7 people complete multiples of 15 miles over 30 hours.
- Sunset 30-Mile Race: A night-time event with a 10-hour time limit starting in Milford.
- 15-Mile Race: A single out-and-back loop with a five-hour time limit.
- 15-Mile Relay: A two-person team event where each member runs 7.5 miles.
The 30-hour events often reach capacity quickly, and a waitlist may be implemented. There is no race day registration, and registration fees are non-refundable as they serve as donations to local land conservation. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
