Ghost Train Trail Races

The Ghost Train Trail Races take place October 17 and 18, 2026 in Brookline, New Hampshire, with one event starting in Milford. The event is centered on the Granite Town Rail Trail and is organized as a fundraiser for the Brookline and Milford Conservation Commissions. All profits support local trail maintenance and improvements; the event reports having raised over $350,000 for trail work since 2009.

Distances offered include:

  • 7.5 miles relay leg
  • 15 miles
  • 30 miles night race
  • 30 hour ultramarathon and relay options, multiples of 15 miles possible

The course follows a former railroad corridor that once carried granite and harvested ice. Rails were removed during World War II but some railroad ties remain visible. The trail is mostly straight, flat, and well groomed with a single hill; about one mile of each 15-mile out-and-back section is paved. The route is marked and described on the event course page.

Logistics and policies: there is no race day registration, some events are expected to sell out quickly, and the 30 hour ultramarathon waitlist is capped. Entries are non-refundable and non-transferable and cannot be deferred; unpaid or unused entries become donations to local conservation efforts. The event maintains an inclusionary statement and is a Pride Partner. Pets are not allowed on the course or at base camp except licensed service animals, and open flames are prohibited on course. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
