Ghost Train Rail Trail Races

Ghost Train Rail Trail Race takes place October 17 and 18, 2026 on the Granite Town Rail Trail in New Hampshire. The event includes an ultramarathon, relay options, and shorter point-to-point races. All event proceeds go to the Conservation Commissions of Brookline and Milford, and the race has raised over $350,000 for trail improvements since 2009.

The course follows the former railroad corridor that once moved granite and ice to Massachusetts. The rails were removed during World War II, but a few railroad ties remain visible. The trail is mostly straight, flat, and well groomed with a single hill. About one mile of each 15-mile out-and-back section is paved, and the route is marked.

Race formats include individual and team events. The 30-hour ultramarathon allows competitors to cover any multiple of 15 miles, including distances of 100 miles or more; athletes may choose their distance on race day and the event enforces a 30-hour time limit. Relay formats include a 30-hour relay for teams of two to seven, and a 15-mile relay with two-person teams. A separate 30-mile night race and a standalone 15-mile race are also offered. There is no day-of-race registration, entries are non-refundable and non-transferable. Licensed service dogs are allowed; other pets are not.
