Freight Train Ultra Marathon

Freight Train Ultra Marathon is scheduled for May 9, 2026, at High Bridge Trail State Park. The event was previously held in December and was moved to May due to weather.

Distances offered:

  • 100k
  • 50k
  • Half Marathon

The 100k course begins at Camp Paradise, heads east toward Burkeville and returns to Camp Paradise before continuing toward Pamplin via downtown, Tuggle, and Prospect. The 50k crosses High Bridge, proceeds toward downtown Farmville with aid stations at Osborne Road, Tuggle, and Prospect, reaches an unmanned turnaround past Prospect, then retraces to the finish. The Half Marathon follows the trail west from Camp Paradise toward downtown Farmville to an unmanned turnaround and returns, passing the downtown aid station twice.

Aid stations are located at Camp Paradise, Rice, Orchard Road, Farmville, Tuggle, Prospect Fire Station, and the Pamplin turnaround. There is a 6.5 mile section between Prospect and the Pamplin turnaround without an aid station; crews are recommended to use parking at Elam to split this distance. Drop bags for the 100k are transported to Prospect and available at miles 34.2 and 47.6; 50k runners may also send a drop bag to Prospect.

Pacers are permitted for the 100k after the first visit to Tuggle and for the 50k from Prospect to the finish; pacers are not permitted for the Half Marathon. Dogs may run after the halfway point with prior permission from the race director. Strollers are permitted for the entire distance.

Registration fees listed include starting prices and specific options: Half Marathon $80, 50k $100, 100k $165. A 10% discount is available with code Thanks for military, fire, law enforcement, medical, and educational professionals. Registered runners by November 1 receive a unisex long sleeve hoodie. Every finisher receives a handcrafted holiday ornament; top three male and female finishers in each distance receive handmade pottery awards and the last-place finishers receive a DFL award. Ugly Christmas sweaters and costumes are encouraged; wearers may receive a special item. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
