The Freight Train Ultra Marathon takes place on December 6, 2025, at High Bridge Trail State Park with the start and finish at the Train Depot in downtown Farmville (510 W 3rd Street). The event offers multiple distances with published entry fees.

Course, support and rules
All courses run on the rail trail and are described as flat; the 100k total elevation gain is under 1000 feet. The trail and bridges are exposed to the elements, and road or trail shoes are suitable. Key aid stations and locations include Rice, Orchard Road, downtown Farmville (halfway), Tuggle, Prospect, and Pamplin City. Two long unsupported stretches are Farmville to Rice (about 8.2 miles) and Prospect to Pamplin (about 6.5 miles); runners are advised to carry sufficient water. Drop bags for the 100k are transported to Prospect and are accessible at two points; 50k drop bags may be sent to Tuggle. Pacers are permitted for the 100k after the halfway point and for the 50k on the final section; pacers are not permitted for the half marathon. Dogs may run after the halfway point with prior permission; strollers are permitted for the entire distance. The 100k has a published 19-hour time limit. Lodging options are available nearby, including the Hotel Weyanoke three blocks from the start. Awards include a long-sleeve hoodie for registrations by November 1, handcrafted finisher ornaments, and pottery awards for top finishers.
