Freight Train Ultra Marathon - Overview
The event takes place at High Bridge Trail State Park with the start and finish at the Train Depot in downtown Farmville. Distances offered:
- Half Marathon
- 50k
- 100k
The course is a rail trail and is described as flat. Total elevation gain for the 100k is under 1000 feet. Because much of the trail and the bridge are exposed, runners should expect no tree cover on exposed sections. Road or trail shoes are acceptable. Packet pick up is available the evening before at the Train Depot and on race day at the start/finish line. The event is part of the High Bridge Challenge when combined with the Night Train race in the same calendar year.
Course, aid, and race rules
100k runners run east and west from Farmville with a halfway aid station at the start/finish. Key aid stations and access notes include Rice, Orchard Road, Prospect, Tuggle, and Pamplin City. Two long unsupported sections are Farmville to Rice (about 8.2 miles) and Prospect to Pamplin (about 6.5 miles); crew access is available at Elam. Drop bags for the 100k are transported to Prospect and available at two mile points; 50k drop bags may be sent to Tuggle. Pacers are allowed for the 100k after the halfway point and for 50k from Tuggle to the finish; pacers are not allowed for the Half Marathon. Dogs may run after the halfway point with prior permission; strollers are permitted for the entire distance. Awards include a hoodie for early registrants, ornaments for finishers, and pottery awards for top finishers. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
