Event Overview
The Freebird 5K is an annual running and walking event held at the Coldstream Dog Park and along the Legacy Trail in Lexington, Kentucky. The 2026 edition marks the second year of this event, which serves to honor the life and legacy of Charles O’Connell and benefit the Lexington Public Safety Museum. This museum focuses on preserving the history of public safety agencies within Fayette County.
Participants can choose from several event distances and formats:
- 5K Run/Walk: A competitive, timed 3.1 mile race on the paved surfaces of the Legacy Trail.
- 1 Mile Fun Walk: An untimed walk distance.
- Virtual Runner/Walker: A 3.1 mile option for participants to complete the distance at their own location.
The 5K course is categorized as flat and fast, utilizing the paved trail system. The event features professional photography with free race photos provided to participants. Competition categories for the 5K include overall awards for the top three male and female finishers, as well as age group awards in five-year increments ranging from under 14 to over 70.
A commemorative unisex t-shirt is included with registration for all race distances, including volunteers. Amenities at the park include morning packet pickup and food for participants.
