About the race
Girls on the Run Central Kentucky stages a celebratory 5K at Keeneland in Lexington, KY as the culmination of its eight-week program. The event gives program participants a tangible sense of accomplishment as they complete a 3.1-mile course; the council reports more than 325 girls take part in the finish each season.
Every registered participant who completes the 5K receives a commemorative medal. Program participants and coaches are pre-registered by the council and do not need to register separately; family members, friends and community participants may register to join the event.
Safety and accessibility measures are in place. Every participant must wear a race bib, and the council assigns running buddies so participants complete the course alongside a designated adult or volunteer. The course is monitored with head counts and a safety plan guides staff and volunteers in responding to incidents. The event is accessible to people with disabilities; designated parking is available.
The council also organizes volunteers for tasks such as set-up and tear down, registration, course marshaling, running buddy assignments, water stations, cheer stations and activity stations such as face painting. Volunteers appointed through the council are subject to background checks. The council sells merchandise at the event and notes that registration prices increase four weeks before the event for non-program participants.
