FlatRock : Elk City Lake, Independence, KS
FlatRock offers a set of trail races held at the Outlet Channel Group Shelter near Elk City Lake in Independence, KS. The event includes the following distances:
- 50K
- 25K
- 12K
- 5K
The course is a technical, primarily single-track out-and-back on the Elk River Hiking Trail. The measured forest trail passes through limestone bluffs, rock formations, and scenic vistas.
Support and services vary by distance. The 50K has seven aid stations, five fully stocked and two water-only stations, with aid spacing of about 3.5 to 5 miles. The 25K has three aid stations, two fully stocked and one water-only at the turn-around. The 12K has one fully stocked aid station. The 5K has no aid stations. Drop bags are allowed only for the 50K and are accepted at OakRidge and the turn-around; crews for the 50K may access OakRidge and the turn-around. Complimentary race photos will be provided by Mile 90 Photography.
Packet pickup includes a Friday evening option with a spaghetti dinner offering vegetarian and gluten-free choices, and an on-site pickup option on race morning. Camping with showers is available near the start; motels are located in Independence.
Event policies include credits instead of refunds with a sliding scale, rules on DNFs/DQs and dropdowns, a volunteer benefits program, and requirements that animals be leashed and trekking poles are allowed. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
