FlatRock, Independence KS
FlatRock is a trail running event held at Elk City Lake Outlet Channel Shelter near Independence, Kansas. It offers multiple distances on a primarily single track, out and back course that follows the Elk River Hiking Trail through forested areas with limestone bluffs, rock formations, and scenic vistas. The event has a long history as an early trail ultra in Kansas and past editions have included notable weather events.

Aid station support varies by distance. The 50K has seven aid stations, five fully stocked with water, electrolyte drink, and snack-type foods including soup and sandwiches, plus two water-only stations; stations are roughly 3.5 to 5 miles apart. The 25K has three aid stations with similar provisioning at two locations and one water-only turnaround; stations are about 3.5 miles apart. The 12K has one fully stocked aid station. The 5K has no aid stations.
Drop bags and crew access are permitted for the 50K only, with crew access allowed at OakRidge and the turnaround. Packet pickup is offered on the day before and race morning, and a pre-race spaghetti dinner with vegetarian and gluten free options is provided at the Friday packet pickup. Complimentary race photos are taken by Mile 90 Photography. The event uses local EMS for medical response and enforces rules on course conduct and environmental care.
