About the race
FlatRock in Independence, KS is a multi-distance trail event based at the Outlet Channel Group Shelter near Elk City Lake. The course is an accurately measured, primarily single-track forest trail that runs out and back along the Elk River Hiking Trail and passes limestone bluffs, rock formations, and scenic vistas.

Aid station coverage varies by distance. The 50K has 7 aid stations, five fully stocked with water, electrolyte drink, and snack-type foods including soup and sandwiches, and two water-only stations; spacing is about 3.5 to 5 miles. The 25K has 3 aid stations with similar provisioning and a water-only turn-around. The 12K has one fully stocked aid station. The 5K has no aid stations.
Race support and logistics include two packet pickup opportunities, with a Friday evening pickup offering a pre-race spaghetti dinner with vegetarian and gluten-free options, and a Saturday morning pickup beginning at 5:30am. Drop bags and crew access are allowed only for the 50K at OakRidge and the turn-around; drop bags should be shoebox size, waterproof, and clearly marked. The event is part of the FlatRock Triple Crown; finishing WinterRock 25K, FlatRock 101K, and FlatRock 50K earns a special award. Policies cover deferral credit on a sliding scale, volunteer benefits including registration discounts, a military discount, DNF/DQ procedures, and basic race rules such as no littering and leashed animals.
