FlatRock - September 26, 2026
FlatRock in Independence, KS is a trail running event held at Elk City Lake Outlet Channel Group Shelter. The event offers multiple distances:
- 50K
- 25K
- 12K
- 5K
The course is a primarily single-track, out-and-back route on the Elk River Hiking Trail. The measured forest trail passes limestone bluffs, rock formations, and scenic vistas. Terrain is described as technical and winding.
Aid station support varies by distance. The 50K has seven aid stations, five fully stocked with water, electrolyte drink, and snack-type foods including soup and sandwiches, plus two water-only stations. The 25K has three aid stations with two fully stocked and one water-only at the turnaround. The 12K has one fully stocked aid station. The 5K has no aid stations. Approximate spacing between stations is about 3.5 to 5 miles for the longer distances.
Logistics include two packet pickup opportunities with a Friday evening option that includes a spaghetti dinner with vegetarian and gluten-free choices, and a Saturday morning pickup beginning at 5:30am. Drop bags and crew access are permitted for the 50K only, with drop bags transported to specified aid stations and returned to the shelter as stations close.
Additional notes: trekking poles are allowed, dogs must be leashed, finishers and volunteers receive awards or benefits, complimentary race photos will be provided, and participants are responsible for their own medical preparedness.
