FlatRock 101
FlatRock 101 is scheduled for April 17, 2027 in Independence, KS. The event offers multiple trail distances around Elk City Lake on the Elk River Hiking Trail.
Distances include:
- 101 Mile
- 101K
- 50K
- 25K
- 12K
- 5K
The course is a double out-and-back on an accurately measured forest trail. Runners follow mostly single-track terrain that is very rocky and winds through limestone bluffs, rock formations, and scenic vistas. The course description notes no long hills.
Aid station support varies by distance, with the 101 Mile having 24 aid stations (18 fully stocked, 6 water only) and smaller races having fewer stations; the 5K has no aid stations. Drop bags are allowed only for the 50K, 101K, and 101 Mile and must be marked and kept to about shoebox size. Crew access is permitted for 50K, 101K, and 101 Mile at Oak Ridge, the Turnaround, and the Start/Finish. Pacers are allowed for 101K and 101 Mile under specified conditions and must sign a waiver.
There are two packet pickup opportunities, including a Friday evening packet pickup with a spaghetti dinner that includes vegetarian and gluten free options. Camping with showers is available near the start; hotels in Independence are approximately 7 miles away. Trekking poles and leashed dogs are allowed.
