WinterRock January 2, 2027
WinterRock is a trail running event in Independence, KS, organized by FlatRock Race Series and held at Elk City Lake near the Outlet Channel Shelter. The event offers multiple distance options as part of the FlatRock Triple Crown series and uses the Elk River Hiking Trail.
The course is a technical, mostly single track out-and-back that passes through forest, limestone bluffs, rock formations, and scenic vistas. Aid on course is very limited and largely unmanned: the 25K includes three unmanned aid stations and the 12K has a single unmanned aid station at the turnaround. Aid stations are approximately 3.5 to 4 miles apart and provide water only; participants must carry their own drinking container and any required calories or fuel.
Additional event details include on-site packet pickup at the Outlet Channel Group Shelter on race day and medallions awarded at the 2027 WinterRock event. The race is part of the FlatRock Triple Crown, which pairs WinterRock with the FlatRock 101 (April 17, 2027) and the FlatRock 50K (September 25, 2027). The organizer provides a volunteer benefit program and a military discount, and maintains a sliding scale for credit transfers based on how far in advance a change is requested.
Rules note that dogs must be leashed, trekking poles are allowed, supplies may not be stashed on course, and runners are responsible for their own safety and decisions. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
