WinterRock
WinterRock is a trail running event held at the Outlet Channel Shelter at Elk City Lake in Independence, KS. The event offers multiple distances and is part of the FlatRock Triple Crown series. The course is a technical, mostly single track out and back on the Elk River Hiking Trail that passes limestone bluffs, rock formations, and scenic vistas on an accurately measured forest trail.
Distances include:
- 25K race
- 12K race
- FlatRock Triple Crown three race series
Aid on course is very limited and unmanned. The 25K has three unmanned aid stations and the 12K has a single turnaround aid station; stations are about 3.5 to 4 miles apart and provide only water. No cups are available so participants must carry their own handheld bottle and are responsible for their own fuel needs.
Packet pickup and the start area are at the Outlet Channel Group Shelter near the north side of the Elk City Lake dam. Trekking poles are allowed. Dogs are permitted if leashed. Shirts and medallions are provided and post race food such as Frito Chili Pie will be available.
The event offers a Triple Crown award for finishing all three FlatRock races, and a sliding scale credit policy for transfers prior to the event date. Race rules address littering, course order, dropdowns, DNF and DQ procedures, and conduct toward race personnel. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
