WinterRock (Independence, KS)
WinterRock is a trail race held at Elk City Lake with events organized by the FlatRock Race Series. The course is a technical, mostly single-track out-and-back along the Elk River Hiking Trail, winding through limestone bluffs, rock formations, and scenic vistas. Medallions are awarded to finishers and post-race food such as Frito Chili Pie will be available.
Distances offered at WinterRock:
- 25K
- 12K
The 25K includes three unmanned aid stations spaced roughly 3.5–4 miles apart; the 12K has a single unmanned turnaround aid station. Aid stations provide only water and no cups are available, so participants must carry their own drinking container. Fuel must be carried by each participant.
WinterRock is part of the FlatRock Triple Crown series. Runners who complete WinterRock (25K), FlatRock 101 (spring), and FlatRock 50K (fall) receive a special award for completing the combined distance (options listed as 176K or 237.54K depending on spring distance choice). A discounted Triple Crown registration option is offered for all three races.
Event policies note no refunds, with a credit system for transfers to other FlatRock events (100% credit 90+ days out, 75% credit 30–89 days out, no credit under 30 days). Trekking poles are allowed, dogs are permitted on leash, and race rules prohibit littering and course cutting. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
