WinterRock
WinterRock is a trail running event held at Elk City Lake near Independence, KS. The course is a technical, mostly single-track out and back along the Elk River Hiking Trail that passes limestone bluffs, rock formations, and scenic vistas. The start and packet pickup are at the Outlet Channel Shelter on the north side of the Elk City Lake dam.
Distances offered include:
- Triple Crown entry covering all three FlatRock series races
- 25K
- 12K
The 25K includes three aid stations and the 12K has a single turnaround aid station. All aid stations are unmanned and provide only water; stations are about 3.5 to 4 miles apart. No cups are provided, so runners must carry their own handheld bottles and are responsible for their own fuel and supplies.
Event management provides race rules and operating policies: drop downs to a shorter distance are allowed before race start, DNFs and DQs are recorded per race rules, and cancellations occur only under extreme circumstances with no refunds. The event offers volunteer benefits including shirts and registration discounts, and a military discount is available. Trekking poles are allowed and dogs are permitted if leashed. Finishing all three FlatRock series races qualifies a runner for a special Triple Crown award. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
