WinterRock
WinterRock is a trail running event held at the Outlet Channel Shelter at Elk City Lake near Independence, Kansas. It is organized by the FlatRock Race Series and is part of the FlatRock Triple Crown series.
Distances offered include:
- 25K
- 12K
- 101K
- 101 Mile
The course is a technical, mostly single track out and back along the Elk River Hiking Trail. The forest trail is accurately measured and passes limestone bluffs, rock formations, and scenic vistas.
Aid on course is very limited and largely unmanned. The 25K route includes three unmanned aid stations with only water; the 12K has one unmanned aid station at the turnaround. Aid stations are approximately 3.5 to 4 miles apart, no cups are provided, and participants must carry their own water and any fuel.
Packet pickup and the start and finish are at the Outlet Channel Group Shelter on the north side of the Elk City Lake dam. Medallions will be awarded at the 2027 WinterRock and Frito Chili Pie plus other post race food will be available.
Volunteer participation earns benefits for future race entries, and active duty military and veterans are eligible for a discount. Trekking poles are allowed and dogs are permitted only on leash. Race rules cover littering, course cutting, withdrawals, and behavior; disqualification is possible for rule violations. Cancellations or refunds are handled only under extreme circumstances.
