Fall Backyard Burn Trail Run - Laurel Hill
The Fall Backyard Burn Trail Run at Laurel Hill Park takes place in Lorton, Virginia, south of the Capital Beltway. The event is staged at the Workhouse Arts Center, the former site of the Lorton Reformatory. Participants run past historical features including old guard towers.
The course features 1,600 acres of former prison grounds, offering a landscape that transitions between forested areas and open meadows. The terrain is primarily singletrack consisting of dirt and crushed stone, with only short paved sections at the start and finish. While the route lacks extended climbs, it includes frequent short elevation changes. The total elevation gain is 350 feet for the shorter distance and 700 feet for the longer distance.
Available distances include:
- 5.4 miles (1 lap)
- 10 miles (2 laps)
Registration includes professional race operations, aid stations, medical support, and post-race food such as breakfast burritos. Participants receive a tri-blend t-shirt, and finish medals are available as an optional add-on. A separate kids race for ages 2 to 11 is held on-site, including a supervised nature and STEM program for children while adults are on the course.
The event follows specific rules for safety and environment. In-ear headphones, pets, pacers, and baby strollers are not allowed on the course. There are no cut-off times for participants. Parking is available at the Workhouse Arts Center complex. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
