Trail Running at Eklutna Lake

The Eklutna IceBreaker takes place in Chugiak, Alaska, along the scenic corridors of Chugach State Park. This out-and-back event is held on a lakeside trail that winds along the shoreline of Eklutna Lake. Participants can choose between two race distances:

  • 10 Mile
  • 20 Mile

The course primarily utilizes the lakeside trail, though race organizers may divert runners to the upper road or trail if ice or unsafe conditions occur. Runners can expect a variety of Alaskan spring terrain, which may include packed snow, ice sheets, mud, and soft snow.

There is no cellular reception at the race location. To manage safety, medical staff are stationed at turnaround points, and race staff maintain a satellite connection at the start and finish area. Limited aid stations are available at the turnaround points (mile 5, 10, and 15), providing water, snacks, and basic medical support.

Parking at Eklutna Lake requires a 2026 Alaska State Parks parking pass. In-person finishers receive a medal, and podium awards are presented to the top three male and female finishers in each distance. Participants who register by late February are guaranteed a specific size for the long sleeve race t-shirt. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
