East Fork Challenge : Bethel, Ohio
The event offers four trail distances around William H. Harsha Lake in East Fork State Park: a 100 mile, a 100K, a 50K, and a 15 mile out-and-back. The full loop is about 33 miles; the 100 mile race is three loops, the 100K is two loops, and the 50K is one loop. The 15 mile race runs out to the first manned aid station and returns.
The course follows mountain bike and hiking trails, some park road shoulder, and sections of the Steve Newman Worldwalker Perimeter trail. Runners will encounter lake views, wooded single track, meadows, creek crossings, and a waterfall in a pine forest area. The course is described as rolling with many smaller climbs rather than long sustained climbs.
Aid stations are placed around the loop, including a main start/finish aid station with crew access and several fully manned stations at intermediate points. Some water-only and unmanned stations are also on course. Crews and pacers have specific access rules for certain stations and loops; drop bags are available at select locations.
This is a cupless event. Mandatory gear includes a headlamp or waist light with spare power, a cell phone, a container for at least 1 liter of liquid, and an emergency poncho or rain jacket. Recommended items include extra calories, salt, basic first aid and blister care, spare socks, and sun and heat protection. Pacers are allowed for 100 mile and 100K runners starting with the second loop; one pacer per runner and a waiver are required.
Packet pickup is at the start/finish area the day before and the morning of the race. The organizer states there are no refunds. The event includes branded runner swag and finisher awards. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
