Double Dipsea description
The Double Dipsea is an annual trail race first held in 1970 and run over a 13.7 mile course. The event begins at Stinson Beach, follows the Dipsea Trail to Mill Valley, and returns to Stinson Beach. The course is mostly single track and includes many steep sections and long flights of stairs.
The race uses a handicapped start format with the slowest starters beginning first and the fastest starters last. This format produces frequent passing on narrow trails, so navigating other runners is a significant part of the event. Runners must meet course cut-offs.
The event has been organized under the Walt Stack DSE name and is connected with the Dolphin South End Runners club. Volunteer roles are part of the event organization and the race lists sponsors who support the event.
Information published by the organizer describes the course as historically significant to local trail running, emphasizes its physical and logistical challenges, and notes that the race has been held for multiple decades. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
