Dormouse Challenge
The Dormouse Challenge is a six hour off road event held at Salcey Forest, NN7 2HX, on Wootton Road. The format lets each participant complete as many laps of the course as they wish within the time limit. The loop is a 3.5 mile off road circuit; organisers note that a marathon requires about seven laps and a half marathon about four laps.
The route runs on well maintained pathways with no asphalt. Surfaces are mainly crushed stone or compacted forest floor. Narrow sections contain leaf litter and can become muddy or slippery when wet. On dry days road shoes are acceptable, while trail shoes may be preferable in wet conditions.
Facilities at Salcey Forest include a café and toilets. Parking is charged and a special rate of £3.80 for the day has been arranged for entrants. The number 33 bus stops inside Salcey Forest and the site is about 18 minutes from Northampton and nine minutes from Junction 15 of the M1; the closest train station is Northampton.
Canicross is permitted with short leads and consideration for other runners; canicross entrants should use the specific canicross race category. Rucking is allowed. A GPX file of the route is available and aid stations will offer refreshments including mince pies and other treats. Participants may choose a medal or an alternative tree token that supports tree planting and wildflower seeds.
