Dash for Detection: Oral Cancer Awareness 5K

The Academy of General Dentistry is organizing a 5K event in Denver's City Park, located at 2001 Colorado Blvd, Denver, CO 80205. The event is scheduled for April 11, 2026 and is dedicated to raising awareness about oral cancer.

The event information highlights risk factors for oral cancer, including tobacco use, heavy alcohol use, and HPV infection. Symptoms listed include non-healing sores, lumps, and unusual red or white patches inside the mouth. Treatment options may involve surgery, radiation, and sometimes chemotherapy. Projections for 2024 cited in the event materials indicate approximately 58,450 new cases of oral cavity and oropharyngeal cancers and around 12,230 deaths.

Logistics include professional chip timing with results published after the race, and bib pick-up that requires a photo ID. Parking inside City Park will be closed for racers; parking is available in surrounding City Park lots, at the Zoo, or in nearby neighborhoods, with a short walk to the start area. The first 100 participants are guaranteed a commemorative t-shirt and goody bag, goody bags will also be handed out at the finish line, and top finishers will receive prizes. All participants and volunteers receive a raffle ticket for a post-race celebration.

The University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine will operate a head and neck educational screening booth staffed by students and licensed dentists. The event will proceed rain or shine. The listed entry fee is $38.35 including a $3.35 fee, with a price increase after March 18, 2026. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
