Dark Skies 100K
The Dark Skies 100K is a point-to-point trail race offered as part of the West Virginia Trail Fest. The course begins at Seneca State Forest headquarters and follows trails that pass the Seneca fire tower in the opening miles before joining the Allegheny Trail and the Greenbrier River Trail toward Cass, West Virginia.
After Cass the route returns to the Allegheny Trail and passes the Green Bank Observatory before reaching Hosterman, where runners cross the river on a swing bridge. From there the course uses a mix of fire roads and single-track trails to reach Bald Knob at about 4,843 ft. An observation deck and an aid station are located at the base of the Bald Knob fire tower; runners may choose to climb the tower for additional views.
Leaving Bald Knob the route continues on single-track trails and fire roads around Snowshoe, finishing at Snowshoe Village. The course includes approximately 11,500 ft of elevation gain and summits several of the higher peaks in West Virginia. The race has a published cut-off time of 20 hours.
