24-30 Hours of Brake the Habit
Brake the Habit 2026 is an adventure racing event held in Pocahontas County and the town of Marlinton, West Virginia. The race takes place within the Monongahela National Forest and the Allegheny Mountains, covering a total distance of 95 to 120 miles. The event is scheduled for the weekend of May 30-31, 2026.
This competition involves teams of 2 to 4 people participating in single-gender or mixed-gender divisions. There is no solo division for this race. Participants navigate through rugged and remote terrain using various disciplines:
- Trekking
- Packrafting
- Mountain biking
The course is designed with a point-based system where teams aim to collect the most checkpoints within the time limit. All checkpoints are optional, while Transition Areas (TAs) are mandatory. This structure allows teams of different skill levels to choose their routes and decide which checkpoints to pursue to reach the finish line on time.
A specific segment of the race includes packrafting, where teams move over land with their rafts and gear. This overland section ranges from 3 to 6 miles and may involve off-trail navigation. Teams are required to carry their paddle gear on foot for this foot-based leg, but biking with packrafts is not required.
The event serves as a USARA Regional Qualifier for the 2026 National Championships and is part of the Adventure Racing World Series (ARWS) North American Circuit. Check-in typically occurs on Friday evening or Saturday morning. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
