Dare to Scare 5k & Sweet Treat Fun Run

The event takes place on Saturday, October 24, 2026, and will proceed rain or shine. The 5k begins at the Coastal Studies Institute, 850 NC-345, Wanchese, NC 27981, and finishes at the Virginia S. Tillett Community Center, 950 Marshall C. Collins Drive, Manteo, NC 27954. The Sweet Treat Fun Run begins and ends at the Virginia S. Tillett Community Center.

• 5k (3.1 miles)
• Fun Run (1 mile)
• Virtual 5k (3.1 miles)

Entry fees vary by registration date. Fees noted in the event information include $45 if received by September 14, 2026; higher fees for later registration; virtual and fun run options with and without shirts are available at different prices. Shirt availability is guaranteed for participants registered by September 14, 2026 and is limited afterward. Race packets include sponsor materials when provided. Medals are provided for all participants; awards are planned for the top three male and female finishers of the 5k and for top costume contest winners. Fun Run participants are guaranteed a race medal, spooky swag and additional surprises.

Pre-race transportation will be provided for runners who park at the finish and need a ride to the start. The Virginia S. Tillett Community Center parking lot will be closed to race participants and spectators. Vehicle access at the Coastal Studies Institute will be restricted until it is safe to enter or exit. Packet pick up is scheduled at the Virginia S. Tillett Community Center on Thursday, October 22, and day-of packet pickup and registration procedures are described in the event information.

Virtual participants may complete the 5k any time between registration and race day and may submit an official time on the event page. Dare County employees seeking a wellness point must submit proof of completion showing distance, time and date by October 23, 2026. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
