Dare to Scare 5k & Sweet Treat Fun Run : event overview
This event includes an in-person 5k run/walk, a 1-mile fun run, and a virtual 5k option. The 5k run/walk begins at the Coastal Studies Institute (CSI) in Wanchese and finishes at the Virginia S. Tillett Community Center (VTCC) in Manteo. The fun run begins and ends at the VTCC. Pre-race festivities are planned at CSI for the 5k and at VTCC for the fun run; these activities are open to runners and spectators. The event is held rain or shine.

Registration and fees follow tiered pricing. Early in-person 5k registrations are available at a lower fee; fees increase for later online and day-of registration. Virtual and fun run entries offer options with or without shirts at different prices. Long sleeve shirts are guaranteed only for participants registered by September 14, 2026; shirts after that date are limited and may not be available on race day. Race packets include sponsor materials when provided.
Logistics emphasize parking at the finish with shuttle transport to the 5k start for those who choose it; there will be no return trips from VTCC to CSI. Entry awards include medals for all participants, top three male and female 5k finishers, and top costume contest winners. Virtual participants may complete the 5k between registration and race day and submit a time on runsignup.com; medals for virtual participants will be mailed within two weeks of the event.
