Dare to Scare 5K & Sweet Treat Fun Run
The event in October takes place in Dare County and includes an in-person 5k run/walk, a short fun run, and a virtual 5k option. The in-person 5k begins at the Coastal Studies Institute in Wanchese and finishes at the Virginia S. Tillett Community Center in Manteo. The fun run both begins and ends at the Virginia S. Tillett Community Center. Packet pickup is scheduled the day before at the Virginia S. Tillett Community Center, with additional packet and swag distribution at the finish after the race.

Entry fees vary by registration timing. The 5k fee ranges from $45 to $55 depending on when registration is received. Virtual 5k and Fun Run fees are listed with options without a shirt and with a shirt. Shirts are long sleeve; 5k registrants who register by September 14, 2026 are guaranteed a shirt. Shirt availability is limited for later registrations and may not be available on race day. Medals are provided for all participants. Awards are given to the top three male and female finishers of the 5k and to costume contest winners. Fun Run participants receive a medal, spooky swag and some sweet surprises.
Pre-race transportation is provided for participants who park at the finish and need a ride to the 5k start. There are no return trips from the Virginia S. Tillett Community Center to the Coastal Studies Institute. Parking at the Virginia S. Tillett Community Center will be closed to participants and spectators. Access to the Coastal Studies Institute campus will be restricted while runners are on course to maintain safety.
Virtual participants may complete the 5k any time from registration until race day and submit an official time through the event platform on an honor basis. Medals for virtual participants will be mailed within two weeks of the event date. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
