Event overview
The Dare to Scare event includes a 5k run/walk, a Sweet Treat Fun Run, and a VIRTUAL Dare to Scare 5k. The 5k run/walk begins at the Coastal Studies Institute (850 NC-345, Wanchese, NC) and finishes at the Virginia S. Tillett Community Center (950 Marshall C. Collins Drive, Manteo, NC). The fun run begins and ends at the Virginia S. Tillett Community Center. The event is scheduled to run rain or shine. Awards are planned for the top three male and female finishers in the 5k and for top costume contest winners. Medals are provided for all participants; fun run participants are guaranteed a medal and additional themed swag.
Registration, shirts and logistics
Entry fees listed include tiered pricing for the 5k: $40 if received by September 14, 2025; $45 from September 15 to October 26, 2025; and $50 for packet pick up or on race day (October 23 and 24, 2025). Virtual 5k and Fun Run fees are shown as $15 without a shirt and $40 with a shirt. Shirts are long sleeve and are guaranteed only for registrations received by September 14, 2025; later registrations receive shirts on a first-come, first-served basis. Packet pickup for all participants is scheduled at the Virginia S. Tillett Community Center on Friday, October 24, 2025, during the stated pickup hours. Pre-race transportation will be provided for participants who park at the finish; there will be no return trips from the VTCC to CSI. Vehicle access to the CSI campus will be restricted until it is safe to enter or exit and no vehicles will be permitted to leave the CSI lot while runners remain in the area.
