Running of the Leprechauns
The Running of the Leprechauns is a festive athletic event held in the Outer Banks region of North Carolina. Initially established in 2008, the race has served as the annual season opener for Outer Banks Sporting Events since 2017. The event takes place in March to coincide with St. Patrick's Day weekend, featuring a route that travels through areas including Nags Head.
Participants can choose between two main race distances:
- 5K
- 10K
All runners who complete their respective distances receive a finisher medal and a t-shirt. The event features an awards ceremony where the top three male and female finishers in both the 5K and 10K categories are recognized. Please note that awards are not sent by mail and must be collected on-site.
The event includes a post-race celebration featuring music, Irish stew, and a beer garden. Entry to the beer garden requires a photo ID or a specific beer band, which can be obtained during the packet pick-up process. Packet pick-up is held at a local brewery in Kill Devil Hills on the day before the race, with late registration options available at Satterfield Park on the morning of the event. For safety and logistical reasons, strollers and pets are not permitted on the course. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
