Historical Mountain Course
The Currahee Challenge takes place on the Colonel Robert Sink Trail at Currahee Mountain in Toccoa, Georgia. This location served as the training site for several Parachute Infantry Regiments during World War II, including those featured in historical media such as Band of Brothers. The event is sponsored by the Currahee Military Museum, which is located in a renovated train depot where airborne troops originally arrived for training.
The race features two distinct distances on unpaved access roads:
- 5K Run/Walk
- 10K Run
Course Terrain and Details
Both routes are categorized as strenuous. The courses consist of uphill and downhill sections on unpaved surfaces. The 5K Run/Walk turnaround point is approximately halfway up the mountain at a designated water stop. The 10K Run extends further, with the final half-mile before the summit described as especially steep. 10K participants turn around at a historic elevation marker located near the top of the mountain.
The start and finish lines for both events are situated on Ayersville Road near the Currahee Memorial. While the finish line remains open for several hours, it is recommended that 10K participants be able to complete the course within a 2.5-hour timeframe.
Awards and Recognition
Medals are awarded for both the 5K and 10K events. Recognition is given to overall male and female finishers, as well as masters finishers. Age group awards are provided for the top three male and female finishers in 10-year increments, ranging from 10 and under to 80 and over.
