Crystal Lake Aquathon - 2026
The Crystal Lake Aquathon takes place on Sunday, July 19, 2026 at Three Oaks Recreation Area in Crystal Lake, Illinois. This is the ninth running of the event and is described as the original Illinois Aquathon. Proceeds benefit Girls on the Run of Northwest Illinois.
The event offers multiple timed race options:
- Sprint Distance: 500 m swim, 5 km run
- Olympic Distance: 1 mile swim, 10 km run
- 2 Mile Swim: timed swim only
- 1 Mile Swim: timed swim only, no awards
- Kids Race: short swim and 1 mile run
- Relay options for Sprint and Olympic distances
- Adaptive Race: 1 mile swim only with allowed physical support and adaptive equipment
The swim takes place in a modified quarry with three islands. The run follows a mix of trail, sand, and pavement. Wetsuits are permitted if water temperature is 78 degrees or lower; the City of Crystal Lake staff will make that determination. Lifeguards and a swim angel will be in the water during the kids event for safety and encouragement.
Awards will be presented for first through third place in the Sprint, Olympic, and 2 Mile Swim events. There are no awards for the kids, adaptive, relay, or 1 mile swim events. Finisher medals for 2026 are handmade by the local Girls on the Run chapter. A post race gathering with food and beverages for participants will follow the event. Packet pickup occurs at specified locations prior to race day and check in on race day is required to receive timing chips. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
