Event overview
The Crystal Lake Aquathon returns to Three Oaks Recreation Area in Crystal Lake, Illinois on July 19, 2026. This is the ninth annual running of the event. Net proceeds from the race benefit Girls on the Run of Northwest Illinois. The swim portion takes place in a modified quarry that routes swimmers around three islands. The run section uses a mix of trail, sand, and pavement and will include a loop around the water.
Race formats and distances
- Sprint Distance - 500 m swim and 5 km run
- Olympic Distance - 1 mile swim and 10 km run
- 2 Mile Swim - swim only, timed
- 1 Mile Swim - swim only, timed
There are relay options for the sprint and Olympic distances.
A Kids' Race offers a shorter swim plus a one-mile run; participants receive swag, a swim cap, and a finisher's medal. An Adaptive Race is a one-mile swim where swimmers may use adaptive equipment and receive physical support from family or friends as needed.
Safety, rules, and awards
Wetsuits are allowed if water temperature is 78 degrees or lower, with the decision made by City of Crystal Lake staff. Lifeguards and a swim angel will be present for the Kids' Race. Awards will be given for first through third place in the sprint, Olympic, and 2-mile swim events. There are no awards for the kids, adaptive, relay, or 1-mile swim events. Post-race food and beverages will be provided for participants. Packet pick-up takes place at Smith Physical Therapy and Running Academy and at the Three Oaks site.
