Cornhill Highland Games Fernie Race
The Cornhill Highland Games features the return of the Fernie Race, offering road running events for both children and adults. The event includes two primary distances that utilize the local terrain and the main games arena.
Participants can choose between the following distances:
- 3 km: A single lap course designed for participants under the age of 12 and under the age of 16.
- 6 km: A two lap course designed for adults aged 16 and over.
The route for both races begins with a 200m circuit of the games arena before heading out of the village. Runners follow the Fernie road, which involves a gradual one-kilometer climb followed by a downhill section back toward the village. While the 3 km participants return to the arena to finish after their first lap, those in the 6 km event continue past the arena to complete a second loop of the road course before their final lap in the arena.
The races take place on public roads that are closed to traffic for the safety of the participants. Marshals are stationed along the course to assist runners. Facilities such as toilets are available on-site at the Highland Games grounds. Registration includes a medal, a goodie bag, water, and entry to the Highland Games event.
Trophies and prize money are awarded to the top three male and female finishers in each age category. Adults who wish to accompany younger children in the 3 km event may do so without formal race entry, though standard admission fees to the Highland Games apply.
