Colonial Beach Triathlon
The Colonial Beach event in Colonial Beach, VA features Olympic and Sprint triathlons with Relay and Aquabike options on a single race day in June. The swim takes place in the brackish Potomac River with a time trial start on a rectangular course that parallels the shore; the course uses yellow triangle turn buoys and orange sighting buoys about every 75 meters. Historically the swim has not been wetsuit legal with water temperatures around 80–82F; a temperature reading is posted the Thursday before the event and an official reading is taken by USAT officials on race morning.
Distances offered:
- Olympic Triathlon, Aquabike: 1.5K swim, 26 mile bike, 10K run
- Sprint Triathlon, Aquabike: 750 m swim, 14 mile bike, 5K run
The Olympic bike is two laps of the Sprint loop and includes rolling hills and flats on well paved roads; the Sprint bike is a mostly flat, one-loop course with three turns. Both bike courses run near the Potomac River and marshland. Run courses are pancake flat out-and-back routes along the boardwalk and Irvine Ave; aid stations are located approximately every mile and supply Gatorade and ice water. Packet pickup occurs at the race site on the Saturday evening before the race and again on race morning; the race site address is 30 Colonial Ave, Colonial Beach, VA 22443.
The event is USA Triathlon sanctioned. Registered athletes receive a tech race shirt, socks, a finisher medal, and post-race food and drink. Registrations are non-refundable; deferrals and race insurance options are available. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
