Colonial Beach Triathlon : Colonial Beach, VA
The Colonial Beach Triathlon takes place in Colonial Beach, Virginia on the Potomac River and offers both Olympic and Sprint distance races with time trial swim starts. The swim is in the brackish Potomac River on a rectangular course that parallels the shore; the route stays within about 150 meters of the beach and features yellow triangle turn buoys and orange sighting buoys approximately every 75 meters. Water temperatures historically hover around 80–82°F and wetsuit legality is determined by a temperature reading before the event.
Distances:
- Olympic: 1.5K swim, 26 mile bike, 10K run
- Sprint: 750 m swim, 14 mile bike, 5K run
The Olympic bike is two laps of the Sprint loop and combines rolling hills and flats on well paved roads with views of the Potomac, marshland and forests. The Sprint bike is a fast, mostly flat one-loop course with three turns. Both run courses are pancake flat out-and-back routes along waterfront boardwalks; the Olympic run includes shaded back roads for miles 2–4. Aid stations are placed approximately every mile and serve Gatorade and ice water.
The event is USA Triathlon sanctioned and includes race categories such as Overall, Masters, Age Group, Aquabike, Military, Clydesdale, Athena and Relay Teams. Packet pickup occurs at the race site and photo ID is required to collect race materials. Race swag has included a tech T-shirt, custom finisher medal, race socks and free finisher photos. The event supports the Rappahannock Area YMCA and relies on volunteers. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
