Event Overview
The Coalfields Backyard Ultra is a Last Runner Standing event sanctioned by Lazarus Lake through the Backyard Ultra organization. It is the only backyard ultra in West Virginia. The event takes place on a measured loop at Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College in Williamson, West Virginia.
Course Details
The course is a 4.1667-mile out-and-back loop on asphalt. Runners start in the parking lot and follow a path along the West Williamson Flood wall river path. The route passes Williamson PK-8 school and goes through a neighborhood to a turnaround point at 2.08 miles. The course is described as very flat and will be marked with cones and directional arrows. One section may become saturated with rain, in which case a reroute will be provided.
Race Format and Rules
- The event follows standard Backyard Ultra rules.
- A loop starts precisely every hour.
- All runners must be in the starting corral at the bell to begin the next loop.
- Each loop must be completed within the hour to continue.
- No personal aid or non-competitors are allowed on the course during a loop.
- The winner is the last person to complete a loop.
- Timing is managed by Brunning Endurance Timing, with live results and a video feed provided.
Facilities and Aid
There is one aid station at the start/finish line providing water, hydration drinks, and food. Porta potties are available at both ends of the course, and a tech building will be open for restrooms and food. Participants can set up a personal camp/station at the start/finish line for resting between loops. A camping fee applies for those staying overnight.
