About the race
Coal Miner is a trail ultramarathon held in Roslyn, WA. The primary course is 51.3 miles long with total climb reported between 10,100' and 11,300'. The start area is the southeast corner of Roslyn Pioneer Park where the Coal Mines Trail enters the woods; a bathroom is adjacent to the start.
The route links Cle Elum Ridge with Sasse Ridge, summits Hex, Sasse and Jolly Mountains, then descends Jolly Creek to the Middle Fork of the Teanaway River. Runners follow the river toward its confluence with the West Fork, then use the Big Sandy Trails back up to Cle Elum Ridge before returning to Roslyn. Aid stations are located as follows: Corral Creek (mile 9.9), Sasse Ridge (mile 19.3), Middle Fork (mile 33.3), and West Fork (mile 38.6). The course totals 51.3 miles.
The event emphasizes self-reliance. There are minimal aid offerings beyond water and basic calories, no course markings, and GPX tracks are provided by email at least one week before the event; participants must preload these into their own map app and use them to navigate. Entrants must name a prior hard-trail 100k or longer as a prerequisite and must carry an inReach or similar satellite messenger with an active subscription. Finish verification depends on submitted GPX data and required summit selfies. The organizer notes surprise swag from the course and a full refund policy for dissatisfied participants.
