Climb 89

Climb 89 is a hill-repeat Everesting event held on Badger Mountain in Richland, WA. Participants run an out-and-back climb on a designated course and repeat it enough times to reach set cumulative elevation goals. Completion of 100 laps equals the elevation of Mt. Everest (29,032 ft).

Event format and course

The course is 0.35 mile one-way up the access road on the west side of Badger Mountain. Each ascent gains 292 feet and has an average grade of 16 percent. Terrain is a mix of dirt and rocks and can be uneven. Lap counting uses barcode scanners; each participant receives a lanyard badge and may scan a bib barcode as an alternative. A single Strava activity that includes 100 repeats of the event segment is intended to qualify for Everesting recognition.

Finisher awards are issued by completed laps in these categories:

  • 100 laps - Mt. Everest (29,032 ft)
  • 85 laps - Annapurna III (24,787 ft)
  • 70 laps - Denali (20,310 ft)
  • 50 laps - Mt. Rainier (14,411 ft)
  • 29 laps - Mt. St. Helens (8,363 ft)
  • 13 laps - Rattlesnake Mountain (3,531 ft)

Logistics and rules

The event base is Badger Mountain Westgate Trailhead (46.242357, -119.342787).
