Plutonium Man Triathlon - Richland, WA
The Plutonium Man Triathlon is a one-day multi-distance triathlon held in Richland, Washington. Events offered include individual Olympic and sprint distances and Olympic-distance 3-person relay divisions with open, coed, and women-only categories.
Race formats:
- Olympic: 1.3 km swim, 40 km bike, 10 km run
- Sprint: 1.3 km swim, 20 km bike, 5 km run
- Olympic relays: 3-person teams open, coed, or women-only
The swim takes place in the Columbia River from a beach upstream of the North Richland starch plant and follows the current to an exit near Sprout Road. A single transition area is located at the southeast corner of the WSU Tri-Cities campus. The bike course departs on Sprout Road, continues onto George Washington Way, and uses loops depending on distance. The run follows footpaths and roads through the campus area with a notable turn by the Triton Submarine monument; Olympic athletes complete two loops while sprint athletes complete one.
Field size is limited to 400 individual athletes and 25 teams. Registration is online only; there is no mail-in or race day registration. Entry fees vary by registration date and a one-day USA Triathlon license may be required for nonmembers. Chip timing records split and finish times and results are posted by the timing company. Awards include top overall and age-group placings and awards for relay teams. Packet pickup is available the day before at Atomic Ale Brewpub in Richland.
