Event Overview
The Chicago Federation of Labor May Day 5K is a run and walk held in late April. This is the fourth edition of the event. It commemorates May Day and its importance to the Chicago Labor Movement. The event encourages individuals of all ages and fitness levels to participate and is described as family-friendly.
Location & Course
The race starts and finishes at Chicago Firefighters and Paramedic Memorial Park, adjacent to the Lakeside Center at McCormick Place on the Lakefront Trail. The 5 km course continues up the trail through the Museum Campus and includes a segment on Solidarity Drive. It offers views of Chicago's Downtown skyline. The final course is subject to change.
Event Details & Schedule
Race day packet pick-up opens at 7:00 AM near the starting line. Pre-race packet pick-up will be available on the Friday before the event at a separate location in Chicago. Gear check will be available. The race starts at 8:00 AM. All participants must complete the course by 9:30 AM to receive an official time. Free parking validation is provided for McCormick Place Lot C.
Registration & Awards
There are two registration categories:
- 5K Run/Walk for general participants.
- Kid's 5k Run and Walk for children 12 years old and younger.
Registration fees vary by date, with early pricing available. All adult participants receive a commemorative, moisture-wicking technical t-shirt made in the USA and union-printed. Child participants receive a cotton youth-shirt. T-shirt size is not guaranteed after a specific date due to printing deadlines.
Trophies are awarded to the top three overall finishers in male, female, and non-binary categories. Medals are awarded to the top three male and female finishers in several age groups. All registered participants aged 12 and younger receive a finisher's medal. A post-race party and awards ceremony includes a complimentary beverage for participants.
Additional Information
Participants can register as a team. The team with the most registered participants wins the "Solidarity Spirit" award. The event is described as "union-powered" and union-strong, with medals, awards, t-shirts, and other services provided by union vendors.
