Event Overview
The Catch the Elf race is a holiday-themed event taking place in Markham, Illinois. This second annual gathering supports the Toy Box Connection Children's Charity, an organization that provides toys and books to children in need. Participants can choose between two main distances:
- 5 km (3.1 miles)
- 10 km (6.2 miles)
Race Format and Features
The event features a unique "Catch the Elf" format. An official race elf starts the course one minute and thirty seconds before the rest of the field. Runners who finish the course before the elf receive a special prize. Both the 5 km and 10 km distances are chip-timed.
A long-sleeve shirt is included with the registration fee. While there is no formal awards ceremony, top three overall finishers and top three male and female finishers in various age groups can collect their awards on-site.
Activities and Charity Support
The event includes several community and holiday activities. Santa is present on-site to meet with children and hear Christmas wishes. There is also a dedicated kids race for participants aged 8 and younger.
Participants may join a Secret Santa gift exchange by bringing a wrapped running-related gift valued between $10 and $15. Those who contribute a gift receive a sticker on their bib allowing them to select a different gift from the pile after finishing. Additionally, the event supports the Toy Box Connection charity; attendees may donate Legos or gift cards from Amazon and Target to assist the organization's mission of redistributing items to children through non-profit partners.
