Cairnsmore Hill Race
The Cairnsmore Hill Race is a circular trail event located in the Southern Galloway mountains. Taking place in December, the race covers a distance of 17.50 km (11 miles) and includes 800 m of total ascent. The event is organized by the Galloway Mountain Rescue Team, and all profits from the race are donated to the team.
The course begins at Muirfad Farm in Palnure and passes over Knocktim. Participants climb steeply through the Door of Cairnsmore before heading north along the Knee of Cairnsmore. The route reaches the summit of Cairnsmore of Fleet at the trig point before a long descent leads back to the finish line. There are three specific checkpoints along the route: the bottom of the Door of Cairnsmore, the Knee of Cairnsmore, and the Cairnsmore of Fleet Trig.
Due to the winter timing and high mountain terrain, participants must be at least 18 years old and possess fell running experience and navigation skills. The race is held under Scottish Hill Runners (SHR) rules and operates with a mandatory kit list for safety. Required items include a map, compass, whistle, hat, gloves, and waterproof top and bottoms with taped seams and an integral hood. Galloway Mountain Rescue provides First Aid cover and marshals on the course, as well as refreshments at the finish. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
