Buchanan Triathlon
The Buchanan Triathlon is a multisport event in Botetourt County, Virginia, that combines road running, road cycling, and river paddling along the James River and local town streets.
The course includes:
- 2 mile road run through town streets, finishing with about 100 meters across grass into Buchanan Town Park
- 13 mile road bike on rolling country roads with a few steep climbs, ending at the Springwood boat landing upstream from Buchanan
- 5 mile paddle down the James River from Springwood to the Twin River Outfitters boat ramp
The James River segment is on the Upper James River Water Trail. The race uses a single transition area with space for bikes and equipment; organizers do not provide bike racks. Kayak rental is available from Twin River Outfitters and includes life jacket, paddle, and kayak staging; rented kayaks can be staged so participants do not need to pick them up on race day. A GPX file of the bike route is available from the organizers.
The paddling portion will be omitted if river levels reach 6 feet or higher; in that case the event becomes a duathlon and the cycling leg is lengthened by approximately 4 miles. Registration fees vary by date with listed tiers of $75, $90, and $100. Participants receive a race t shirt if registered by the stated deadline; post race food, awards for top finishers, and a finisher medal are provided.
