Event
Buchan Country Park Night Score takes place on Thursday 15th January and is organised by Mole Valley. The event is part of the Kent Night Cup series, though participation in the series is not required.
Format and scoring
This is a one-hour score event. The main course has 20 controls numbered 90 to 109, which may be visited in any order. Each control visited scores 10 points. Competitors lose 10 points for each minute, or part of a minute, late back. Bonus points of 10 are awarded for consecutively punching two controls that share the same last digit. Maps show a short line attached to each control circle indicating the direction of its paired control.
Logistics and safety
The car park at Buchan is normally locked at night but will be opened for arrivals and locked again until after the event. Car sharing is available. Under-18s must have parental or guardian permission to enter. Torch, backup torch and whistle are compulsory; cagoules may be required in bad weather. An emergency contact number will be printed on the map and carrying a mobile phone is recommended. COVID regulations no longer apply, but participants are asked to avoid attending if they may be contagious and to respect others' desire for social distancing.
Entry and other information
Entry fees vary by category, including reduced fees for British Orienteering members and juniors. SI dibber hire is available for a small fee; lost hire dibbers are charged at a stated replacement cost. An optional apres-O visit to a local hostelry is planned, venue to be confirmed.
