Bowels of Fleetwith Fell Race
The Bowels of Fleetwith Fell Race is a specialized running event located at the Honister Slate Mine in Borrowdale. This race distinguishes itself by moving through the interior of a mountain, combining open fell running with an underground passage through historic mine tunnels. The event is open to participants aged 16 and over.
The event offers two distinct course distances:
- 5 km
- 10 km
The 5 km course begins with a half-mile uphill section leading into the mine entrance. Participants must wear a helmet and headtorch to navigate through 700 meters of winding tunnels, steep inclines, mining ladders, and large chambers. After exiting the mine 100 meters higher than the entrance, the route continues into the open air on Fleetwith Pike before descending back to the finish line.
The 10 km course starts with an ascent to the summit of Fleetwith Pike via the open fell. Runners then return to the mine entrance to equip helmets and headtorches for the underground segment. Upon emerging from the mine, the route heads to the top of Grey Knotts at an elevation of 697 meters. The final stage involves a rocky descent via the tramway back to the mine site.
Both routes are fully flagged and marshaled, eliminating the need for independent navigation, maps, or compasses. However, the terrain is technical with steep ascents and descents. All participants are required to carry mandatory safety kit, including a waterproof top and bottom, a hat, and gloves. High-visibility flags and arrow boards mark the specific race path.
