Blue Ridge Relay
The Blue Ridge Relay is a long-distance team relay through the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia and North Carolina covering approximately 208 miles. Teams consist of four to twelve runners who rotate through 36 transition areas as they complete the course.
The race begins at Grayson Highlands State Park in Virginia at an elevation of 4920 feet near the base of Mount Rogers. The start area and early legs pass high elevation balds with stands of Fraser Fir, boulder fields, and a herd of wild ponies. The route also connects with sections of the Appalachian Trail and the Virginia Highlands Horse Trail.
After Grayson Highlands the route mainly follows scenic country roads through North Carolina's High Country. The course includes four legs on the Blue Ridge Parkway totaling almost twenty miles and sections of four legs that run along almost fourteen miles of the New River. Leg 15 follows about 10.5 miles along the south shoulder of Grandfather Mountain.
The route runs through multiple small towns and hamlets before finishing in Asheville, North Carolina. The finish area is held at the Highland Brewing Company Meadow, which offers a large lawn, shade, picnic tables and onsite brewery facilities.
