Iron Mountain Trail Run
The Iron Mountain Trail Run is a trail race that starts and finishes in Damascus, Virginia at the Damascus Town Park. This event takes place primarily within the Jefferson National Forest.
The course follows a variety of terrain types. Participants encounter open surfaces along the VA Creeper Trail and forest service roads, as well as more technical single track sections. A significant portion of the route follows the Iron Mountain ridgeline, utilizing a path that formerly served as the Appalachian Trail. The terrain includes steep sections and road crossings where participants must navigate traffic independently.
There are four distance options available for the event:
- 50 miles: Features a total climb of approximately 8,000 feet with a 12-hour completion limit.
- 40 miles: This distance has a 12-hour completion limit.
- 30 miles: This distance has a 10-hour completion limit.
- 16 miles: This distance has an 8-hour completion limit.
Due to local modifications following Hurricane Helene, the start of the race mirrors the finish, and the total distance may be approximately two miles shorter than the traditional measurements. Participants for all distances start in 15-minute waves to manage traffic on trail structures. Registration fees cover aid station support during the race and a post-race meal.
