Blackwater Canyon Half Marathon
The Blackwater Canyon Half Marathon is a point-to-point race in West Virginia that follows the Blackwater Canyon railroad grade and the Allegheny Highlands Trail. The course begins in Thomas and concludes at Mill Race Park in Parsons. This event supports the Highlands Trail Foundation, a non-profit organization focused on trail development in the Potomac Highlands.
The race covers a distance of 13.1 miles and features a descent of approximately 1,400 feet. The course surface consists of a mix of pavement, dirt, and crushed stone. Registration for the event is limited to a total of 200 participants.
Transportation is provided for runners via a shuttle bus that travels from the finish area at Mill Race Park in Parsons to the starting line in Thomas. A bag drop service is available at the start, with items transported back to the finish pavilion for collection after the race.
Participants can access three aid stations along the route, which provide water, hydration drinks, and snacks. This is a cupless event, and runners are expected to use their own water bottles or the speed cups provided in their registration packets.
In addition to the half marathon, participants have the option to take part in the Black-Hel Double. This involves completing the half marathon on Saturday and the Helvetia 10k Mountain Run on Sunday. Finishers of both events receive a specialized hat.
Awards include handmade ceramic mugs and gift certificates for overall top finishers. Age group awards are also presented for both male and female categories across various age ranges. Finishers receive locally made medallions and gender-specific shirts. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
