6th Annual Black Canyon Donkey Derby
The Black Canyon Donkey Derby is a traditional burro racing event held at Deep Canyon Ranch in Black Canyon City, Arizona. This sport is rooted in Western mining history, where participants walk or run while leading a donkey on a lead rope. Participants must either bring their own donkey or make prior arrangements to rent one before registering.
Course Options
The event offers three distinct distances on the multi-use Black Canyon Trail:
- 3 Miles: A beginner-friendly route that is mostly level and wide with minor inclines.
- 6 Miles: A mix of two-track, cow trail, and single-track featuring steep, rocky hills.
- 9 Miles: A technical course with canyon sections requiring a packsaddle, pick, pan, and shovel.
Trail Conditions and Gear
The terrain consists of rocky surfaces and desert landscapes. For the longer distances, boots for the burros and packsaddles are recommended. Participants are advised to carry at least one quart of water, as aid stations are limited. Recommended personal gear includes trail shoes with good tread, gloves to prevent rope burns, and tools for removing cactus spines.
Regulations and Safety
The runner and burro must remain together as a team for the entire race. All animals must be fitted with a halter and a lead rope no longer than 15 feet. Riding the donkey is strictly prohibited. While helpers are permitted for youth aged 12 and under on the 3-mile course, these teams are not eligible for awards. Out-of-state animals must have a negative Coggins test and a health certificate as per state law. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
