Winchester Trail Festival
The BigWayRound is a trail running event based in Winchester that explores the surrounding English countryside. The course begins in the city center and follows the Itchen Navigation before ascending past St Catherine’s Hill. Participants run through undulating terrain toward Cheesefoot Head, utilizing several established paths including the South Downs Way, Allan King Way, St Swithun’s Way, and the Itchen Way. The route follows the River Itchen past Avington Hall.
The event features four distinct distances:
- 14 miles
- 19 miles
- Marathon
- 50K Ultramarathon
Participants follow a fully marked and marshalled course with chip timing. Runners start in self-seeded waves based on their predicted average pace to manage the transition from the town center to the trails. The event includes fully stocked aid stations and on-course photographers. All finishers receive a bespoke medal, though participants may opt to have a tree planted instead of receiving a medal through the Trees Not Tees organization.
Mandatory equipment includes a minimum of 500ml of fluid, carried in a hydration vest or handheld flask. While the course is marked, the organizer recommends downloading the GPX file onto a mobile device or wearable watch. Bag drop tents are available at the start and finish area located at Winchester Rugby Club. Canicross entries are not permitted for this event.
