The Big Sioux Rec Trail Races take place in Big Sioux Recreation Area along the east edge of Brandon, South Dakota. The event includes multiple short-distance trail races that start and finish at the main picnic shelter and playground near the park entrance. The courses use the park’s paved north-south bike trail and several dirt and grass side trails, routing runners through prairie, wooded areas, and up a bluff with views over Brandon.
Distances:
- 5 Miler
- 2 Miler
- Free Kids Race (about 1 mile)
Facilities near the start and finish include a large covered picnic shelter, a playground, a vault toilet, and an additional port-a-potty. The event is part of a trail race series that awards points by age division; age groups for series scoring include 29 and under, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, and 60+. Chip timing is provided for the races. Entry fees are listed with standard and youth pricing and there is a multi-race pricing option for the full series.
Because the courses run through the Big Sioux floodplain, routes may be altered or races canceled if heavy rainfall affects the park. Park day permits or state park passes are required for entry. No refunds or future race credits are offered. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
