Event Overview
The Big Sioux Rec Trail Race takes place at the Big Sioux Recreation Area in Brandon, South Dakota. Organized by Run Sioux Falls, the event features multi-terrain courses that navigate the eastern edge of Brandon along the Big Sioux River. The park contains a mix of paved bike paths, dirt trails, and grass paths that pass through wide prairies, heavily wooded sections, and bluffs overlooking the city.
Participants can choose between several distances:
- 5 Miler
- 2 Miler
- Free Kids Race (approximately 1 mile)
The 5 Miler and 2 Miler courses start and finish near the main picnic shelter and playground. Runners utilize the paved trail system before transitioning onto natural surface trails that include prairie sections and an ascent up a bluff. The event is part of a larger trail series, and these races are chip-timed.
The venue offers amenities such as a playground, a covered picnic shelter, and restroom facilities. Because the routes are located within the Big Sioux floodplain, courses may be altered if heavy rainfall occurs prior to the event. All participants entering the Big Sioux Recreation Area are required to have a state park permit or a day pass. Registrants for the 2026 event receive a specific promotional item, while supplies last. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
