BIG BEAR SQUATCH NORTH
Big Bear Squatch North is a mountain trail event held at Harriman State Park and Bear Mountain, New York, produced with the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference. The event offers three distance options:
- 13.1 miles (half marathon)
- 10K
- 10K Ruck
The course is a lollipop format and features rugged, technical singletrack with steep climbs, steep descents, cliffs, and rock-scrambling sections. The half marathon includes about 2,600 ft of elevation gain and the 10K about 1,400 ft. Courses are marked with colored ribbons and directional arrows; the 10K uses pink ribbons and the early portion of the half marathon uses blue ribbons. GPX files and a course map are provided for navigation.
Capacity is limited to 400 participants across all events, and the event has sold out in previous years. There is a 6 hour course cutoff for all distances and specific per-mile pace requirements for finishers. Aid stations include a staffed Queensboro station and a water-only station at West Mountain Shelter; both aid stations are not crew-accessible. The start and finish location is Anthony Wayne Recreation Area at Bear Mountain.
All participants must carry mandatory safety gear: a charged cell phone, water bottle or hydration pack (recommended at least 1.5 L), at least 200 extra calories, a whistle, and a GPX of the course on a device. Rucking divisions require a pack with dry weight of either 15 lbs or 30 lbs; weight vests are not allowed. The event is not recommended for children under 16.
