Because of the Brave 5K
Because of the Brave 5K is a non-timed 5-kilometre event held on Memorial Day, Monday, May 25, 2026, at American Village in Montevallo, Alabama (3727 Highway 119). The event is organized to honor service members who died in military service. A portion of each entry fee will be donated to the Support Committee for the Alabama National Cemetery and to American Village. Additional donations may be made to either organization.
Course and logistics
The course is a 1.55-mile loop that participants complete twice to cover the full 5K. The route is on paved surfaces and will be marked with American flags. Strollers and wheelchairs are allowed on the course. Each participant must carry a 2' x 3' American flag on a pole for the entire course; these flags are supplied at race-day packet pickup. At the finish participants exchange their carried flag for a custom Because of the Brave 5K challenge coin. There are no awards for top finishers. One water station will be available near the start/finish area, with hydration at the halfway point and fruit at the finish. No refunds are offered; entries can be transferred to another person or deferred to the next year. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
