Because of the Brave 5K
Because of the Brave 5K is a Memorial Day event held at American Village in Montevallo, Alabama on May 25, 2026. The event honors military service members who died in service and includes elements intended for remembrance throughout the course.
The 5K distance is 3.1 miles and follows a clearly marked 1.55 mile loop completed twice. The entire course is on paved surfaces, so strollers and wheelchairs are welcome. Participants must carry a 2' x 3' American flag attached to a light pole for the entire course; the flag and pole are sized to allow participation by children. A custom Because of the Brave flag will be available near the start/finish for writing the names of honored heroes and will be returned to future events for display.
This event is organized by The Running Birds and is explicitly noncompetitive; no awards are given and the event is not a timed race. Runners and walkers exchange the American flag they carried for a custom challenge coin at the finish. One water station is provided in the start/finish area with hydration available at the halfway point and at the finish, and fruit is provided at the finish.
A portion of each entry fee will be donated to the American Village and the Support Committee for the Alabama National Cemetery. Registration opens June 24, 2025 and closes May 25, 2026; the registration fee is $35.00. Packet pickup and parking occur at the main American Village lots with restroom access.
