Because of the Brave 5K
The Because of the Brave 5K is a Memorial Day event held on Monday, May 25, 2026, at American Village in Montevallo, Alabama (3727 Highway 119). The event is organized by The Running Birds and is intended as an occasion to honor service members who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
Participants carry a 2' x 3' American flag mounted on a light pole for the entire course. The 5K consists of a clearly marked 1.55-mile loop completed twice on paved surfaces; strollers and wheelchairs are welcome. The course will be marked with American flags and a custom Because of the Brave event flag will display names of honored heroes.
This is not a timed race and there are no awards for finishing places. At packet pickup on race day participants receive the flag they will carry and later exchange it at the finish for a custom Because of the Brave challenge coin. One water station is provided near the start/finish area and fruit is available at the finish.
A portion of entry fees will be donated to both the Support Committee for the Alabama National Cemetery and American Village. Entries are nonrefundable; transfers or deferrals are permitted by contacting the event organizers. Parking and restroom access are available near the start/finish area.
