Beast of Burden - Summer
Beast of Burden - Summer is an ultrarunning event on the historic Erie Canal towpath, starting at Wide Water's Marina in Lockport, New York. Runners have access to showers, restrooms and a fully stocked aid station at the marina.
The course is a 25 mile out-and-back loop. The first mile from the marina is on a paved trail, then the route crosses a Lockport draw bridge onto the Erie Canal towpath. After the bridge the surface is crushed cinder. The loop layout is used repeatedly by longer distances.
Along the route there are multiple staffed aid stations. The first aid station is at the marina, another is about 6 miles along the towpath, and a third aid station and turn-around are located near the Village of Middleport after about 5.5 additional miles. Aid stations offer fluids and a variety of foods including Heed, water, coffee, Coke, gels, grilled cheese sandwiches, chicken broth, pizza, pancakes and donuts.
Distances offered
- 100 mile - four 25 mile out-and-back loops; completion requires a prior official 50 mile finish.
- 50 mile - two 25 mile out-and-back loops.
- 25 mile - one 25 mile out-and-back loop.
A special "Double Beast Buckle" is awarded to any 100 mile participant who finishes both the Winter Beast 100 and Summer Beast 100 in the same calendar year. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
