Bear Triathlon : May 16-17, 2026
The Bear Triathlon takes place at Lums Pond State Park, 1068 Howell School Road, Bear, DE 19701. The event is sanctioned by USA Triathlon. Registration opens November 14, 2025. Relay teams of two or three people are allowed. Triathlon participants must be 14 years or older; the youth race is for ages 7 to 15. Registration for adult and youth entries includes a short sleeve shirt and a finisher medal.
Courses and distances
- Sprint: 750 m swim, 10 mi bike, 3 mi run
- Olympic: 1500 m swim, 23 mi bike, 6 mi run
- Youth 7-8: 50 yd swim, 2 mi bike, 0.5 mi run
- Youth 9-10: 100 yd swim, 2 mi bike, 0.5 mi run
- Youth 11-12: 100 yd swim, 4 mi bike, 1 mi run
- Youth 13-15: 150 yd swim, 6 mi bike, 1 mi run
Course features and race procedures
The swim takes place in Lums Pond with a beach-entry wave start; participants keep inflatable course markers on their left. Wetsuit use follows the USAT temperature policy. The bike course is flat and on paved roads, marked with signage and supported by police at turns; it remains open to vehicle traffic. The run uses asphalt and natural surfaces; two aid stations on the triathlon run course provide water and sports drink. Athlete check-in and packet pick-up must be done in person; participants receive a wristband, bike adhesive number, ankle timing chip, and must wear a bib on the run. The transition area is restricted to athletes with the wristband. Parking is available inside the park in Areas 1, 2, and 3. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
