Bannister Anniversary Mile's
This event commemorates the sub-four-minute mile and its anniversary. It is scheduled for Wednesday 6th May 2026 and will take the form of a series of small, seeded races with start lists published after entries close.
Registration and number collection are located at the finish area in Blackweir Playing Fields, beside the changing rooms and the old ambulance depot, a short walk from the North Road car park and the Blackweir Tavern. Numbers will be available from the evening before or on the day at the collection point.
The event began in 2014 as an in-house race for a local running club and was opened to outside entrants in 2018. The 2026 edition also marks the anniversary of the athlete’s death on 3rd March 2018. Twenty-three days after the original sub-four-minute performance, a woman became the first to run the mile in under five minutes with a time of 4:59.6.
Online entries open soon. Entries close on Sunday 3rd May 2026 or when the event is full; there are no entries on the day. Entry fees are listed as £6 for affiliated runners and £8 for non affiliated runners. Parking is available at nearby locations including North Road, Sophia Gardens and Tesco Extra. Public toilets are located in the Blackweir Tavern on North Road.
Course: the route starts at the gates by the changing rooms, follows the parkrun nursery loop in reverse with direction changes at the crossroads, and finishes at the changing rooms building. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
