Trail Running in the White Mountain National Forest
The Baldface Scramble takes place in Chatham, New Hampshire, within the Evans Notch area of the White Mountain National Forest. The event features technical trail running over steep ledges and single-track paths, starting and finishing at Baldface Farm (Copeland Field) off Route 113.
Participants can choose from two distances:
- 29 km: A two-loop course covering approximately 17.8 miles with 6,226 feet of elevation gain.
- 14 km: A single-loop course covering approximately 9 miles with 3,479 feet of elevation gain.
The 14 km route goes over the Baldfaces before descending via the Bicknell Ridge Trail. The 29 km route completes this first loop, returns to the start/finish area for an aid station, and then proceeds to a second loop that crosses over Mount Meader.
Due to the technical nature of the terrain, there are specific entry requirements. Participants must have completed a moderately technical trail race of at least 10 miles or possess sufficient mountain experience. Mandatory gear is required for all runners, including at least two liters of fluids, 400 calories of food, a windbreaker or rain shell, and an emergency space blanket. There are no aid stations on the 14 km course; runners must be self-sufficient.
The staging area is located on private property. Parking is provided in a grass field with access via a long driveway off Route 113. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
