Backpocket Beer Mile : Johnston Town Center
The 4th Annual Backpocket Beer Mile takes place on October 9, 2026 at the Yard in the Johnston Town Center, 6205 Merle Hay Rd, Johnston, IA. The event offers competitive and fun waves and includes a relay option in the fun wave where teams of two may register; both relay participants must register individually. Registration opens October 12, 2025 and closes October 9, 2026. The registration fee is $25 per entry. Packet pickup is available Friday October 9 from 3:00 to 5:00 at Backpocket Pin & Pixel in Johnston.
Each entry consists of four laps around the Yard. Before each lap, participants must consume one standard beer in a designated beer zone, for a total of four beers. Beers used in the race must be standard beers with a minimum alcohol content of 5% ABV. Participants must be of legal drinking age. Any athlete who is unable to keep down their beer receives a penalty lap before continuing.
Timing for the competitive wave will be provided by All American Timing. Medical personnel will be on-site. Prizes are listed for top overall male and female finishers, top male and female in the age categories 21-29, 30-39, 40-49, and 50+, and for best costume. Costumes are encouraged. The event includes both competitive and recreational categories and specifies rules related to alcohol consumption and race conduct. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
