The Abner Oakes III Veterans Run offers three event distances and takes place at the Farmington Canal parking area on Sherman Avenue in Hamden, Connecticut.

The 5K and 10K use an out-and-back route on the Farmington Canal Trail with no traffic intersections to cross. Water stops are placed at mile 1.5 for the 5K, and at miles 1.5, 3, and 4.5 for the 10K. Awards are given based on overall race time (not chip time) with overall top finishers recognized for male, female, and non-binary categories; age-group awards are given for standard ranges from 12 and under through 80 plus.
Proceeds benefit House of Heroes Connecticut. That organization provides one-day, no-cost home repairs for Connecticut military and public safety veterans and their surviving spouses through partnerships with volunteers, civic groups, and businesses. The Connecticut chapter has completed multiple projects across many towns since 2012.
Race registration includes race entry, chip timing, race-day parking, and an event T-shirt; shirt availability depends on registration timing. Packet pickup and same-day registration are available at the race site. Parking is available in the Farmington Canal lot and along the street; participants are asked to avoid local business parking lots. Pets are not allowed in registration areas, at the start line, or on the course. Deferral and refund options vary by how far in advance a request is made.
