The Sparta Jockey 502er is an unsupported solo event that traverses the state of North Carolina, starting in Sparta and finishing at Jockey's Ridge State Park in Nags Head. Racers are self-supported and must manage their own logistics and supplies while following the designated route.
Entrants park in Waco at a secured, monitored site and are transported to the Sparta start location. Participants have 336 hours (14 days) to complete the course. Finishers receive a custom finisher award and may purchase a finishers hoodie reserved for those who complete the entire distance. Finishers are provided a hotel stay near Nags Head as part of entry and are shuttled back to their vehicles on a regular schedule; cars are not located at the finish.
The event enforces cutoffs every 37 miles beginning on 11 May; a first missed cutoff results in a warning, and a second missed cutoff leads to removal for safety. Organizers may disqualify participants for littering, riding in a vehicle during the event, committing a crime, or other unsafe behavior. Weather in the North Carolina mountains can be cold and hazardous; the race team monitors conditions and can provide warming vehicles or other safety measures, but the event remains primarily the participant's responsibility.
