Zanfel Orienteering Race
The Zanfel Orienteering Race is an adventure sports event held at Conestoga Lake in Denton, Nebraska. This competition is the second race in the Zanfel Series and features a format where participants navigate around the lake area. The course consists of approximately 15 miles and includes a combination of trail running and kayaking. Much of the route is located on established trails or within bush terrain.
The event offers several categories for participation, including solo entries or teams of two and three people in male, female, or coed divisions. One specific requirement for teams is that they only use one kayak or paddle board per group, with team members deciding which individual will paddle. Participants are permitted to use the HandyGPS mobile application and a compass to assist with navigation during the race.
The event organizers provide pre-plotted CalTopo maps, instructions, and punch cards at the check-in area. New participants have the opportunity to receive assistance if they are unfamiliar with the sport of orienteering. All participants must finish the course within a three-hour time limit. Entry fees cover a shirt, awards, snacks, and drinks.
Required Gear:
- Water, snacks, sunscreen, and tick spray
- Large zip lock bag for maps and materials
- Life jacket, cell phone, and kayak or paddle board
The start and finish area is located at the parking lot near the dam at the east entrance to the lake. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
