Event Details
The Yellowstone Gateway 30K is a trail running event.
The Course
The course is just over 18 miles (approximately 30K) long. It features a total climb of 2,609 feet and a descent of 2,366 feet. The route is entirely off-road, using a mix of trails, gravel roads, US Forest Service dirt roads, and scree-covered jeep paths.
The race begins on the trails at Sage Lodge. The first section is a 10-mile climb that grows progressively steeper. The initial miles pass through rolling grasslands in the Paradise Valley foothills, near the Yellowstone River. Runners then ascend a deep gorge alongside Emigrant Creek.
The course reaches its high point at the St. Julian Mine aid station, which is an out-and-back section within Emigrant Gulch. After this turnaround, there is an 8-mile descent that gradually eases in gradient. This section passes through the historic Old Chico mining settlement and follows Emigrant Creek back down. The finish line is at Chico Hot Springs Resort.
Runner Information
There are three aid stations on the course. The race is cup-less, meaning runners must carry their own bottle or hydration pack for water and electrolyte drink. The terrain is rocky and uneven in places, and trail shoes are recommended. The course involves crossing Emigrant Creek, where water is typically ankle to shin deep.
A shuttle bus will transport runners from the finish area parking lot at Chico Hot Springs to the start line at Sage Lodge before the race. Runners can leave a drop bag at the start for transport to the finish.
After the race, a lunch and a beer are provided for runners and volunteers at Chico Hot Springs. Finishers and volunteers also receive a pass for a swim in the resort's pools. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
