Event Overview
The Yakima River Canyon Marathon and Half-Marathon features point-to-point courses through the scenic landscape of the Yakima River Canyon in Washington State. The event utilizes a USATF certified course along the asphalt surfaced Washington State Route 821, connecting the areas of Ellensburg and Selah. The marathon course is recognized as a Boston Marathon qualifier.
Courses and Distances
Participants can choose from the following distances:
- 26.2 Miles (Marathon)
- 13.1 Miles (Half-Marathon)
The marathon begins in Ellensburg on Canyon Road. After two initial loops, the route proceeds south into the canyon, following the Yakima River downstream. The terrain includes two significant hills and various curves on a paved highway. The course concludes in rural Selah with a long downhill section, resulting in a net elevation loss of several hundred feet. The half-marathon starts at the midway point of the marathon course.
Logistics and Support
The event provides bus transportation from designated locations in Selah and Yakima to the starting lines. For the half-marathon, participation is limited to 200 runners due to transportation logistics. Aid stations are positioned every 2 to 3 miles, offering water, hydration drinks, and basic medical supplies like petroleum jelly and bandages. Restrooms and medical personnel are available along the route.
Participation Details
The course remains open for 7 hours, and a 3:00 p.m. closure is enforced. An early start option is available for marathon participants who anticipate needing more than six and a half hours to finish. For safety reasons, bicycles and baby joggers are not permitted on the course. Personal gear drop bags are transported from the start to the finish area. Registration includes a T-shirt, a finisher medal, and a digital finisher certificate. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
