XTERRA South Africa
XTERRA South Africa is an off-road triathlon and multi-sport event held in the Elgin Valley, Grabouw, within the Western Cape. The event is based at the Elgin Grabouw Sports Club and is part of the XTERRA World Tour and the XTERRA Trail Run World Series. The competition features a variety of off-road sport challenges across the iconic trails of the region.
Participants can choose from several triathlon distances and open water swimming events:
- Full Distance Triathlon: 1.5 km swim, 27 km mountain bike, and 10 km trail run.
- Sprint Triathlon: 750 m swim, 11 km mountain bike, and 6 km trail run.
- Super Sprint Triathlon: 250 m swim, 7 km mountain bike, and 2 km trail run.
- 3 km Open Water Swim: Individual swim event.
- 1.5 km Open Water Swim: Individual swim event.
- 750 m Open Water Swim: Individual swim event.
- Kids Race: 100 m swim, 4 km bike, and 1.5 km run.
The mountain bike course for the full distance consists of approximately 80% single track and 20% jeep track, rated as medium difficulty on the IMBA scale. The run course is also primarily single track (85%) and includes a section called the Swamble, where participants wade through a stream.
The event offers qualification slots for the XTERRA World Championship, with 26 age group slots and 30 youth slots available. Facilities on-site include an athlete check-in at the Grabouw Country Club, a pop-up store, and a coffee station on the morning of the races.
